Males and females often exhibit dimorphism across a broad range of phenotypes despite sharing largely the same genome. Achieving distinct, sex-specific phenotypes therefore relies on genomic and regulatory mechanisms that decouple male and female trait expression. Drawing on comparative genomic and transcriptomic analyses across species, tissues, and reproductive modes, I will present findings from my work on the origin and evolutionary dynamics of sex chromosomes, and the role that sex-biased gene expression and alternative splicing play in the evolution of sexual divergence.
