To understand the functional importance of adaptive natural variation, the Institute of Population Genetics and the Institute of Animal Breeding and Genetics host various research groups in the fields of molecular population genetics, statistical genetics, bioinformatics, life history evolution, and phylogenomics. The Institute of Population Genetics is home to the Vienna Graduate School of Population Genetics.
